“Scott Bailey has been a driving force in my education for all four years of high school. From my earliest experiments with competitive Shakespeare acting under his direction in 9th grade, to my culminating fight against the AP English Literature test in 12th, Bailey has been there for me.”
Shayna Cobin, Skidmore College Class of 2029
“In the first year of Mr. Bailey being my teacher, his class was one of the only ones where I felt as if I was actually learning. In both of his classes I took (Honors English 9 and AP Seminar), I felt pushed to grow as reader, writer, and student.”
Elisa Rivas,
Stanford University Class of 2023
“As a student of Mr. Bailey’s, I developed a sophisticated command of grammar that extended into my experience in higher education. Moreover, I became much more knowledgeable in significant works of literature, both past and present."
Joey Safchik, Northwestern University
Class of 2020
A decade after my first (of several) classes with Mr. Bailey, I regularly reference our thought-provoking, engaging discussions about literature, drama and language. His classes were full of rich conversations and lots of laughter. He encouraged creative, outside-of-the-box thinking and I was unquestionably prepared to excel on my AP Literature exam. Most importantly, I still lean on him for quality book recommendations!

Mr. Bailey was one of the nicest and most engaging teachers I’ve ever had. He turned AP Seminar, from a class I was pressured to take, to one I would genuinely look forward to. By using examples of media and literature I was interested in throughout the class, he helped me apply important writing and comprehension skills to subjects that I actually cared about.

About Scott Bailey

After graduating from the UCLA School of Theatre, Film, and Television, Scott Bailey has spent the better part of three decades teaching all levels of high school English and Drama in the Los Angeles area. His dedication to his students and his craft has earned him numerous accolades, including the title of Outstanding Educator from The University of Chicago.

Known for his sharp wit, inspiring mentorship, and uncanny ability to make even 400-year-old verse feel urgent and alive, Scott has helped thousands of students thrive in the classroom, on stage, and in college admissions.

Author, Consultant & Performer

In addition to his teaching career, Scott is the author of the acclaimed book Romeo, Juliet, and Other Screwed-Up Teenagers: An Irreverent Yet Thorough Guide to Introducing the World’s Most Staggeringly Inappropriate Play to a Classroom Full of Confused Freshmen. Austin Tichenor of the Reduced Shakespeare Company praised it as “an invaluable companion for students, educators, and theatre folk alike.”

Scott is not only an experienced AP English teacher whose students have consistently outperformed state and national averages, but also an AP Reader for the College Board. For the past five years, he has spent each summer reading and scoring over 1,000 essays for the AP English Literature exam. This rare insider experience gives Scott a distinct advantage in preparing students to meet the rigorous demands and expectations of AP scorers.

He is also one of the few tutors with firsthand experience teaching the newly developed AP Seminar course. With 91% of his students passing this challenging exam, Scott is uniquely equipped to support students in research, composition, and public speaking—especially during the critical second semester, when AP Seminar teachers are prohibited from offering direct assistance. Scott fills this instructional gap with targeted, ethical support that empowers students to succeed where others cannot.

Scott has also worked as a consultant for MasterClass.com, where he contributed to the David Mamet Teaches Dramatic Writing workbook.

As a performer, Scott has acted with the Independent Shakespeare Company and directed student work featured at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as part of the American High School Theatre Festival. His students have taken home top honors at competitions, including DTASC (Drama Teachers Association of Southern California) and the English-Speaking Union Shakespeare Competition.

Beyond the Classroom

Outside of work, Scott enjoys playing Radiohead and Tom Waits songs on the guitar and piano, traveling through Europe, and losing at Uno to his wife and ten-year-old son.
